Our research into diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system strives to uncover mechanisms and interventions in such disorders and diseases as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, brain and spinal cord injury, and neuromuscular disorders.

The Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, and London Health Sciences Centre represents one the most comprehensive, multi-subspecialty groups in Canada. Skilled neurologists and neurosurgeons provide advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies available for patients with a wide range of neurological disorders. These new and innovative treatments are providing new hope for many patients for a healthier and more normal lifestyle.
Our department is dedicated to upholding the tradition of excellence in teaching, groundbreaking research and cutting edge neuroscience and clinical medicine. It is one of the few in Canada that hires both physicians and surgeons, creating a higher level of collaboration and a competitive advantage in the treatment of complex neurological disorders.
We also work with colleagues in radiology, anesthesia and pathology of brain conditions to create a multidisciplinary team. And, with hospital-based research taking place in close proximity to collaborative basic scientists in imaging and cell biology, the result is groundbreaking research now and in the future.

Paediatric Neurology
The Paediatric neurology research program is broad with activities focused on new therapy development for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, epidemiology of Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy and establishing research networks with peadiatric hospitals across Canada to monitor paediatric neuromuscular disease and gain a better understanding of Cerebral Palsy. Other research includes clinical and molecular studies of neurgenetic and neurometabolic disorders, studies using population databases on epidemiology and natural history of childhood epilepsy, quality of life in children with epilepsy and traumatic brain injury outcome.
