Lawson to celebrate research making an impact on health care, locally and globally

LONDON, ON – Lawson Health Research Institute (Lawson) will celebrate innovative research making a difference to health care at their sixth annual Lawson Impact Awards on Thursday, April 11, 2019.

The event acknowledges the unique accomplishments of Lawson’s scientists, staff, trainees, and industry and community partners. The evening will recognize six award winners who have made an impact on their peers, their partners, their fields of research and the health care system. Four industry and community partners will also be recognized for going above and beyond in their support of hospital-based research.

The evening event, held at the London Convention Centre, will feature keynote speaker Dr. Dorin Comaniciu, a medical imaging and machine intelligence expert. Dr. Comaniciu is the Senior Vice President for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation at Siemens Healthineers. His talk is titled “Artificial Intelligence for Health Care: The Road Ahead.”

Dr. Guido Filler will be the recipient of the Scientist of the Year award. Dr. Filler is a Lawson scientist and paediatric nephrologist at London Health Sciences Centre. He is considered a leader in the fields of paediatric nephrology and clinical pharmacology, and a world expert in measuring kidney function. His work has brought new techniques from the lab to the clinic, not only locally, but nationally and internationally.

Over the past two decades, Dr. Filler extensively studied and demonstrated that a protein called cystatin C could be used as a single blood test biomarker of renal function. This resulted in the creation known as the “Filler formula,” an estimate of renal function now routinely used in health centres across the world. It remains the only formula that has been validated for the estimation of renal function in both children and adults.

“The Lawson Impact Awards allows us to pause and reflect on our accomplishments, while inspiring and encouraging us to further collaborate,” says Dr. David Hill, Scientific Director at Lawson. “The continued success of our awards program is a testament to our dedicated research community.”
